The Virginia Film Festival is delighted to return to the Paramount for another year. Highlights of this year’s festival taking place at The Paramount include a program of Pixar shorts for younger viewers and a 20th anniversary screening of the Disney favorite The Little Mermaid. These events are taking place as part of our Family Day on November 7th on the Downtown Mall.

For our evening screening, we are proud to present an exclusive preview of Rodrigo Garcia’s new film Mother and Child. This complex drama centered around three women was a recent hit at the Toronto Film Festival. The all-star cast includes Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Jimmy Smits and Cherry Jones.

And when she makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula, it seems that all of her dreams have come true. What Ariel doesn’t know though is that Ursula has a secret plan, and Ariel soon must fight to protect her father, her newfound freedom, and her true love. This Oscar â„¢ winning family favorite is credited with reviving the ailing fortunes of Disney and remains one of the studio’s best-crafted pictures. Made in 2008, but still awaiting a US theatrical release, this documentary that tells the true story of the “Fab Five,” a group of friends from Ohio who started their athletic careers in an inner city gym and ultimately grew to become high school basketball legends. The crew, led by future NBA all-star LeBron James, faces countless barriers and tests on their nine-year journey to the top, learning what it means to be players and men along the way. This inspiring story is screened as part of the Film Festival’s Family Day, supported by a grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Baltimore defense attorney Arthur Kirkland is an idealist who cares about his clients, befriends his partners, and visits his aging grandfather every week. Things are not going well for Arthur though, and things begin to unravel as two of his clients grow more and more desperate and his partner begins to mentally unravel. But then, events go from bad to worse as Arthur finds himself defending Henry T. Fleming of a brutal rape, who happens to the judge that Arthur hates the most. As chaos erupts into the courtrooms and everything and everyone is “out of order,” Arthur must find a way to expose corruption and find justice for all.

Rodrigo Garcia’s new film Mother and Child is a complex drama centered around three women: a 50-year-old woman, the daughter she gave up for adoption 35 years ago, and an African American woman looking to adopt a child of her own. A recent hit at the Toronto Film Festival, the all-star cast includes Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington, Samuel Jackson, Jimmy Smits and Cherry Jones.
