For Immediate Release

July 8, 2008

Continuing their 86th Annual Summer Concert Series, the Charlottesville Municipal Band will next feature two special treats -- music for French horn performed by band’s French Horn Ensemble, and works by local composer Gary Fagan.

The 8 pm concert on Tuesday, July 15 is the fourth in the series. Nearly 2,400 people have attended the first three programs that director Steve Layman and the eighty-member ensemble have presented this summer at The Paramount Theater. The concerts offer a great opportunity for the whole family to experience an old-fashioned band concert and the Downtown Mall on a Tuesday evening.

A highlight of the program is the performance by the band’s seven-member French Horn Ensemble, playing Nibelungen March by Richard Wagner, Tritsch-Tratsch Polka by Johann Strauss, and Lowell Shaw’s Frippery #17.

Crozet resident and assistant conductor Gary Fagan will conduct three selections on the program: Overture Bisham Grange and two of his own compositions, Of Still Meadows and Mountains Bold and On Streets of Gold from 2008.

Music Director Layman will round out the program with A Walt Disney Overture, A Jamaican Rhumba, and this concert’s traditional Sousa march -- the Emblem of Unity March.

General admission seating for all free concerts in the Municipal Band of Charlottesville’s 86th Annual Summer Concert Series will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis each concert night. Lobby doors will open at 7 pm. Seating will begin at 7:30. Free parking for concert goers is available in the upper Lexis/Nexis lot at the east end of the mall behind the Charlottesville Pavilion.

Additional Tuesday concerts in the Summer Series will take place on July 9 and August 12. For more information about the Municipal Band of Charlottesville, please visit charlottesvillemunicipalband.org.
