The most frequently performed opera of all time, Carmen’s passionate characters, familiar melodies, and dramatic storyline have attracted audiences since its premiere 150 years ago. Performed in French with English subtitles above the stage, Carmen is filled with suspense, the enchanting rhythm of Flamenco, and music that exudes an intoxicating passion. Carmen lives her life boldly until a relationship with a dangerous man attempts to cage her and places her life on a perilous perch.

Carmen is presented by Charlottesville Opera, formerly Ash Lawn Opera. The company has been presenting opera and musical theater productions since 1978. Each summer, over 140 theater professionals, singers, orchestra musicians, directors, and designers gather in Charlottesville to produce two mainstage performances at The Paramount Theater in addition to concerts throughout the community in June and July.
