Six-year-old Scout Finch (Mary Badham) and her older brother, Jem (Phillip Alford), live in sleepy Maycomb, Alabama, spending much of their time with their friend Dill (John Megna) and spying on their reclusive and mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall). When Atticus (Gregory Peck), their widowed father and a respected lawyer, defends a black man named Tom Robinson (Brock Peters) against fabricated rape charges, the trial and tangent events expose the children to evils of racism and stereotyping.

Did you know?
- Gregory Peck’s summation speech, which runs for 6 minutes and 30 seconds, was nailed in a single take.
- Mary Badham, at age nine during filming, became the youngest girl to receive an Oscar nomination at the time (for Best Actress in a Supporting Role). That title is now held by Quvenzhané Wallis, who was nominated in 2012 for Beasts of the Southern Wild when she was nine-years-old.
- Sharp-eyed viewers will notice that the Radley house, despite its deteriorating condition, is of a much grander design than the others, reflecting the family’s premiere status in the community before the scandal of son Arthur’s transgressions.
