Us? Celebrating 25 Years of The Princess Diaries? Shut Up!

Shy San Francisco teenager Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) is thrown for a loop when, from out of the blue, she learns the astonishing news that she’s a real-life princess! As the heir apparent to the crown of the small European principality of Genovia, Mia begins a comical journey toward the throne when her strict and formidable grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews), shows up to give her “princess lessons.”

Did you know?

  • The scene where Mia slips and falls in the bleachers was real. Anne Hathaway had slipped on a puddle while doing the scene, and director Garry Marshall thought it was so funny that he inserted it in the final cut.
  • It was Anne Hathaway’s idea that the brush should break in her hair at the start of her makeover.
  • One of the waiters in the dinner scene when Mia breaks the water glass says, “It happens all the time.” The same actor played a waiter in Pretty Woman (1990), and said the same line when Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) flings the snail and the waiter catches it. Both movies were directed by Garry Marshall, and have some of the same cast.
