Cville Band Presents: Summer at The Paramount

Our 103rd Summer Season continues at The Paramount Theater, with new pieces and old favorites. Guest artists for this show include Robert Graham, playing “Reflective Mood,” violinist Michelle Younger, playing Julia Delaney’s “Reel and The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” and Band assistant director Burton Hable. Our Instrument Petting Zoo will be operating at the foot of the stage before the performance, so families with younger children can see and touch some of the instruments in the Band.
This is a free event and does not require advance registration. Please contact the Box Office Monday through Friday from 10:00AM to 2:00PM or call 434-979-1333 if you have questions about attending.
About the Artists

Robert Graham attended Indiana University as a National Merit Scholar where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in trombone performance. He has taught on the faculties of Pittsburg State University (Pittsburg, KS), Louisiana State University, and The University of Virginia. Robert has performed with the Charlottesville Symphony, the Lynchburg Symphony, the Richmond Symphony, the West Virginia Symphony, and the Baton Rouge Symphony. Robert created “Charlottesville Resonants,” a trombone ensemble, to bring resonance to the City of Charlottesville following the riot of 2017. He gathered 35 trombonists from around the Commonwealth to play music at the site of the riot.

Michelle Younger is a banjo player and multi-instrumentalist. She bridges the gap between Appalachian Old-Time and contemporary folk music. Her sound is founded on tradition, a technical approach, and exploring new musical landscapes. Whether traveling in the internationally renowned folk trio Harpeth Rising or performing solo, Michelle brings the
authenticity of traditional banjo into new and unexpected contexts. She studied classical guitar at Oberlin Conservatory (B.M.’07) and Eastman School of Music (M.M.’09), and her classical training is evident in her intricate arrangements and technically impressive performances. Michelle’s musicality, her unique clawhammer style of banjo, and her new takes on old tunes make her a promising force in modern folk music.

Burton Hable has been teaching elementary and secondary school band and orchestra in Iowa and Virginia since 2010. He currently plays trombone and serves as Operations Manager for The Charlottesville Band as well as playing in several groups around Albemarle County. Burton is a doctoral candidate in music education at Boston University, and he is researching how people learn music in makerspaces. He also enjoys playing ice hockey, cooking, and travelling with his wife, Chloe, and being a stay-at-home dad to his daughter, Sally.
